Probe committee formed over man beaten, burned to death in Lalmonirhat
The committee has been asked to submit the probe report within the next three days
A three-member probe committee has been formed over the incident of beating a man to death and burning the body on allegations of hurting religious sentiment in Lalmonirhat on Thursday.
Abu Jafar, deputy commissioner of Lalmonirhat, formed the three-member investigation committee on Friday morning headed by Additional District Magistrate, TMA Momin.
The committee has been asked to submit the probe report within the next three days. Rangpur Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 Captain, Reza Ahmed Ferdous said that the RAB was investigating the incident.
"Preparations are underway to file three separate cases including assault on the victim's family and the police and for vandalism of the Union Parishad," Officer-in-Charge of Patgram police station, Sumon Kumar said.
"No arrests have been made so far. However, the police are working to identify those involved in the incident," added Kumar.
RAB and police have been patrolling the area, and several units have been deployed. However, the public has been asked to take precautionary measures in the area.
On Thursday evening locals of Lalmonirhat's Burimari beat and burned the deceased Shahidunnabi Jewel -former employee of Rangpur Cantonment Public School- to death.
According to locals, two men entered a mosque after the evening prayer. Identifying themselves as members of law enforcing agency, they claimed that arms were hidden in the mosque and searched the self where Quaran and hadith books were kept.
While searching, the duo reportedly threw the holy Quran. Soon after, locals took the men away from there, and an angry mob started beating them. One of the two men was able to escape.
Later, hundreds of people beat Jewel and burnt him to death in the street.
Police were sent to bring the situation under control. They fired around 17 rounds of shotgun shells. Ten policemen were injured as angry locals pelted stones.
Video clips and photos of the incident and charred body of the victim went viral on social media soon after the incident happened yesterday.
