Global leaders congratulate Bangladesh on the golden jubilee of independence

On the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence, an array of leaders from across the world sent their greetings to Bangladesh and export support to the country's future endeavours.

Terming Bangladesh 'one of the fastest-growing economies in the world', they observed that Bangladesh has made tremendous progress in last five decades, particularly in social development and disaster preparedness.

They said that it was amazing how much Bangladesh has achieved since its birth.

The messages of the world leaders were read out at the closing session of the 10-day long celebration programme, organised on the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of independence at National Parade Square in the capital on Friday.

Messages sent by the heads of government of the US, Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan were read out by the ambassadors of those countries to Dhaka.

In a video message, the UN Secretary General António Guterres said, "Bangladesh has made tremendous progress in last five decades, particularly on issues of social development, disaster preparedness. I congratulate you on this progress." 

The UN secretary general said that Bangladesh is playing a remarkable roles in world stage through contributing to UN peacekeeping efforts, by becoming the chair of the climate vulnerable forum and sheltering Rohingya refugees. UN is Bangladesh's partner in all these areas.

"We will continue to stand with Bangladesh in tackling climate crisis for the sustainable development goals," he added.

US president Joe Biden said Bangladesh is an example of economic progress and a country of great hope and opportunity.

"I congratulate you and the people of Bangladesh for your remarkable achievements," he said in a written message sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On behalf of the United States, the US President congratulated the people of Bangladesh as Bangladesh celebrates its nation's 50th anniversary of independence.

He said the United States values their friendship with Bangladesh, and they believe that shared commitments to democracy and human rights form the foundation of strong partnerships.  

"I look forward to working with you to strengthen these commitments to build an even brighter future for the people of our nations over the next 50 years and beyond," Biden said.  

He said Bangladesh's hosting of one million Rohingya refugees is an example to the world of humanity and generosity.  

"The United States will continue to be a steadfast partner in finding a durable solution to this crisis," he said.

The US President applauded Bangladesh's commitment on climate change and he looks forward to his Administration working closely with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on this important issue.  

"I extend my best wishes to you and the people of Bangladesh on this important and historic day of celebration," the message read.  

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it is amazing to reflect on how much Bangladesh has achieved since its birth. 

In a video message, PM Johnson remembered the historic visit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to Downing Street in London in 1972. He described the visit as 'instrumental in forging the friendship' between the UK and Bangladesh.

Terming Bangladesh as 'one of the fastest growing economies in the world', Johnson said that the UK and Bangladesh 'share the ambition to create a prosperous and environmentally-sustainable future'.

He also emphasised the bond between the UK and Bangladesh, 'incarnated by the 600,000 strong British-Bangladeshi community who contribute so much to the United Kingdom every day'.

"I think particularly of the fantastic doctor and nurses in our NHS, many of whom are helping to treat and vaccinate people in our battle against Covid-19," he added.

PM Johnson said he looks forward to working with Prime Minister Hasina and see her again at COP26 in Glasgow.

Russian president Vladimir Putin mentioned Bangabandhu as an outstanding political leader in his message. 

He said that the joint effort and constructive bilateral relation in various fields will play an important role to ensure peace, prosperity and security across the region.

He expected that the relation between the two countries will be further strengthened in future for the benefit the people of both the countries. 

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan also rose to the occasion by extending felicitations to Bangladesh on this occasion.

In a written message to PM Sheikh Hasina, he said, "The centenary events to commemorate the late Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are reflective of the deep affection and esteem which he is held by yourself and the people of Bangladesh."

"Pakistan deeply values its fraternal ties with Bangladesh, which are based on shared history, common faith, and convergent interest in promoting lasting peace and security as well as sustainable prosperity in our region and beyond. We would like to fortify our existing bonds with brotherly Bangladesh and build new ones for our succeeding generations, as we believe the destinies of our two people are intertwined." 

"The golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence reminds us of the far-sighted vision of reconciliation and friendship between our two peoples, so dearly cherished by the leaders of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Pakistan remains a sincere partner in the fullest realisation of this vision," he added.     

Imran Khan said, "We would like to fortify our existing bonds with brotherly Bangladesh and build new ones for our succeeding generations, as we believe the destinies of our two peoples are intertwined. On this occasion. Let us renew our resolve to jointly work for a better future for our peoples and even closer ties between our two countries."
