Anti-Fascist Coalition of DU demand home adviser’s resignation
DU Anti-Fascist Coalition Convenor, Tasnim bin Mahfuz, said, “The reason for this is clear: the crime of attacking students in the Dhaka University area on Thursday"
The Anti-Fascist Coalition of Dhaka University, a student organisation, demanded the resignation of Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Friday (17 January).
The protesters held a rally in front of the Raju Sculpture and burned an effigy.
They made the demand in response to what they described as "fascist-style police torture on unarmed students, the failure to ensure the trial of police officers involved in the July uprising killings, and the inability to control the law and order situation in the country."
DU Anti-Fascist Coalition Convenor, Tasnim bin Mahfuz, said, "We demand the unconditional resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser. The reason for this is clear: the crime of attacking students in the Dhaka University area on Thursday. Police have previously attacked unarmed individuals in front of the Prothom Alo office and recently targeted Primeasia University students during their protest."
He added, "The Home Affairs Adviser must take responsibility for this. He has shown his incompetence by failing to take any action. Therefore, he must resign for his failure, and the police officers involved must face trial."
Other speakers, including SM Tanim, Toukir Uddin, and Moyaz Abdullah, also demanded the immediate resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser, trial for the accused police officers, and police reforms.
