Armed attackers rob bank officials of Tk7 lakh; 4 injured
Armed assailants attacked two bank officials and two Ansar members with sharp weapons in Gazipur, making off with Tk 7 lakh.
The injured are Atika Parvin Suravi, 39, in-charge of the Sonali Bank sub-branch at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, cash officer Farzana Naznin Simu, 27, and Ansar members Al Amin, 30, and Raju Mia, 40.
As part of their daily routine, they were transferring cash from the Sonali Bank sub-branch at Tajuddin Medical to the bank's main branch on Sunday afternoon, when they came under attack, according to Gazi Shahiduzzaman, AGM of Sonali Bank's Gazipur Court Building Branch, and local witnesses.
The four were carrying over Tk7 lakh in an auto-rickshaw, heading towards the Principal Branch in the Joarpukur area. Upon reaching the Shaheed Barkat Stadium in the Rathkhola area, they were intercepted by 10-12 armed people on six motorcycles. The assailants attempted to seize the bag of cash and, when resisted, fired warning shots to create panic. They then attacked the four individuals with sharp weapons before escaping with the bag of cash.
Locals rescued the injured and rushed them to the nearby Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Mostafizur Rahman, OC of the Gazipur Sadar Police Station, confirmed that police were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the report. He added that efforts are underway to apprehend the robbers and recover the stolen money. Legal action is in process regarding the incident.
