ASK condemns recommendation of replacing female UNOs
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a national legal aid organisation, on Monday condemned the recommendation of parliamentary standing committee on liberation war affairs ministry seeking replacement of female upazila nirbahi officers (UNO) to provide guards of honour for deceased freedom fighters.
Terming the recommendation as discriminatory, ASK in a press release said that it violates the human rights of women and also goes against equality and policy of justice.
Such recommendation also violates the section 19 (3), 27, 28 of the Constitution and its position for women empowerment, the human rights organisation said.
Earlier, at a meeting on Sunday, the committee recommended the ministry take necessary measures to select other persons to replace female UNOs at guard of honour ceremonies.
The committee also suggested organising guards of honour during daylight hours, said a press release of the parliament secretariat.
These guards of honour are a tribute provided by local administrations to freedom fighters who have died since 1971, in recognition of their contribution to our country's independence.
