Badiul Alam condemns misrepresentation of his statement
In a statement issued today, Alam acknowledged ongoing legal challenges involving leaders of the Awami League, noting that the party’s ability to contest in future elections would hinge on resolving such cases, including those filed under the ICT Act
Badiul Alam, a member of the Election Reform Commission, has strongly condemned what he described as the misrepresentation of his statement by some media outlets regarding future elections.
During a stakeholder dialogue organised by the Election Reform Commission at the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner's office yesterday (19 December), journalists asked him about prospects for upcoming elections.
Regarding Awami League being able to participate in the elections, Badiul Alam was quoted saying, "Like you, we are also waiting to see this. I don't see any obstacles. I don't think any barriers are being created for them."
"We want an inclusive election. Those who are prepared to join polls should be able to do so without any hindrance. There will be no obstructions. I hope all parties will take part in the elections," he added.
However, in a statement issued today, Alam acknowledged ongoing legal challenges involving leaders of the Awami League, noting that the party's ability to contest in future elections would hinge on resolving such cases, including those filed under the ICT Act.
He said, "I stated that our commission will propose necessary reforms to electoral laws and regulations to ensure free, fair, and participatory elections. I also mentioned that I see no obstacles to anyone participating in future elections as long as they comply with the legal framework. Additionally, this is a matter for the Election Commission."
"I want to make it clear that the fall of the ruling Awami League government on 5 August through a mass uprising came at the cost of significant sacrifices, including lives lost by numerous students and citizens. Over the past years, I have played my part in this struggle and faced various forms of harassment," he said.
Citing the role of the uprising's martyrs, Alam added, "Such misrepresentation of my remarks dishonours the sacrifices of Shaheed Abu Saeed and Shaheed Mugdha. This deeply pains me."
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which played a significant role in the uprising, has also condemned Badiul Alam's comments earlier yesterday and requested Badiul Alam Majumder to retract his statement and take necessary actions to prevent the Awami League from taking part in the elections.
