Bangladeshi shot dead by Myanmar security force while ‘fishing’
“They had fired on a suspicion that the intruders might be terrorists,” BGP responded to the BGB protest note
A Bangladeshi fisherman, allegedly while fishing in the Naf River, has died after sustaining bullet injury from Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP).
The victim is Mohammad Islam, 35, a resident of Boroitali area under Teknaf Sadar Union.
Nazir Ahemd, the Teknaf sadar union parishad member from ward-9, said Mohammad along with two others were fishing on a boat in the Naf River on Saturday evening. At one stage BGP members fired on them, leaving Mohammad bullet-hit.

Mohammad's associates took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where he was given the first aid. He was later shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital that very night owing to his critical condition.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Teknaf 2 BGB Battalion Captain Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan said the three fishermen were fishing in the river, breaching a ban.
However, the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) sent a protest note to the BGP regarding the incident.
"They had fired on a suspicion that the intruders might be terrorists," BGP responded to the BGB note as quoted by Foysal.
The government imposed a ban on fishing in the Naf River on 25 August 2017 to prevent the Rohingya exodus and drug smuggling in the Myanmar frontier.
