BNP expects India to respect Bangladesh's democratic aspirations
The BNP leader called upon the Indian government and people to refrain from using anti-Bangladesh rhetoric as a tool in their domestic politics
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has strongly condemned the recent attack on the premises of Bangladesh's Assistant High Commission in Agartala, India, terming it a "pre-planned" act by extremists and expected that Indians would respect the democratic aspirations of the citizens of the new Bangladesh.
In a statement today (3 December) Mirza Fakhrul said, "The attack carried out by members of the 'Hindu Sangharsh Samiti (HSS)' on the Assistant High Commission premises in Agartala appears to be premeditated. Entering the commission's compound, lowering the Bangladesh flag, setting it on fire, and vandalising the premises is a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention."
Expressing hope for mutual respect, Mirza Fakhrul said, "We expect the Indian people to honour the democratic aspirations of the citizens of the new Bangladesh and assist in bringing to justice the leaders who sought refuge in India during the fascist Awami regime."
The BNP leader called upon the Indian government and people to refrain from using anti-Bangladesh rhetoric as a tool in their domestic politics.
"This approach will create long-term strains in bilateral relations between the two nations," he said.
The statement was issued by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Advocate Md Taiful Islam Tipu on behalf of the party.
