BNP files complaint at ICT over ‘crossfire’ killings of 2,276 partymen
The BNP has filed a complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) over the killing of 2,276 leaders and activists in crossfire incidents involving law enforcement agencies, as well as the disappearance of 153 party members between 2008 and 5 August 2024.
Salauddin Khan, a member of the party's litigation data collection cell, filed the complaint on behalf of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (9 January).
The complaint states that under the orders of the Awami League government head, its party members and some overzealous law enforcement members committed heinous murders in the name of "crossfire" to instill fear among BNP supporters and dismantle the party.
It states that 2,276 members of BNP and its affiliated organisations were killed in "crossfire" incidents nationwide, while 153 individuals were abducted or killed after abduction.
"We strongly demand, on behalf of the BNP, that the ICT's investigation agency thoroughly investigate these cases and bring justice," the complaint adds.
After filing the complaint, Salahuddin Khan told reporters, "All the victims of crossfire and disappearances are leaders and activists of our party. For instance, 153 individuals, including Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and leaders Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam, were victims of disappearances."
According to a recent report by Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a human rights organisation, at least 1,926 people were killed extrajudicially in "gunfights" or "crossfires" during the 15 years of the Awami League regime.
