‘Conspiracies were there to make Bangladesh a militant state’
The 45th founding anniversary of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police was celebrated in Dhaka yesterday
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said there were conspiracies to make Bangladesh a militant state but police destroyed all of them with strong determination and dedication.
"Today, police have become friends to the people in a true sense. That is why we have been able to keep up our nationwide development," said the minister at a programme in Dhaka.
He was speaking yesterday as the chief guest at the event organised in the Rajarbagh Police Lines to celebrate the 45th founding anniversary of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Asaduzzaman said the entire country can be made safe for the people if crimes based in Dhaka can be controlled. For that reason, the DMP has formed several specialised police units.
Mostafa Kamal Uddin, secretary of the Public Security Division under the home ministry, said more than 2 crore people live in Dhaka, and the DMP has been working sincerely to secure the densely populated city.
"Many criminal activities have taken place [in Dhaka], but the law enforcers have rooted them out and made the city safe. Now, criminals can run but they cannot run away," he said.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwari said more than 35,000 police members in 50 police stations of the DMP have been working to provide security to the city dwellers.
"Every police station has to become a place of public trust. The police stations need to be the centre of all services," said the police chief.
DMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said the only goal of the DMP should be earning the confidence of citizens, and the policemen will have to be a force of the people.
Meanwhile, the DMP celebrated its birthday amid much enthusiasm and festivity.
In the morning, a colourful procession led by DMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam was brought out from the DMP headquarters.
It paraded main thoroughfares of the city and ended at Rajarbagh Police Lines. Police personnel of all ranks of the DMP participated at the event.
DMP began its journey with 12 police stations along with 6,000 personnel in 1976 under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance.
Over time, the size of the city and the number of its population increased several times and so has the coverage of the DMP.
At present, the total strength of the DMP personnel is more than 26,000, making it the largest unit of the Bangladesh Police.
