ACC sues Anisul over misappropriation of assets, suspicious transactions
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a graft case against former law minister Anisul Huq after the anti-graft watchdog found proof of undisclosed assets worth Tk146 crore against the ex-minister.
Besides, the anti-graft body has also found the former minister's involvement in suspicious transactions worth Tk665 crore, confirmed ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain today.
The case statement said that the accused, between 1 December 2014 and 16 December 2024, while serving as a public servant, committed criminal misconduct, abuse of power, and dishonesty to acquire assets worth Tk146,19,70,096, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income.
He also carried out suspicious transactions involving deposits of Tk349,15,21,582 and withdrawals of Tk316,48,81,608 through 29 bank accounts.
It is further stated in the case document that the accused engaged in offences related to money laundering by concealing or disguising the illegal sources of funds or properties obtained through "corruption and bribery." He is accused of converting, transferring, or handling such funds in violation of Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004; Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947; and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Earlier on 2 December, a Dhaka court sent Anisul to jail in a case filed with the capital's Uttara East Police Station over the killing of Fazlul Karim during the student-led July-August mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ragib Nur passed the order as police produced Anisul before the court after the end of his five-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the completion of the probe.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Imran Ahammed on 20 November had placed the former law minister on a five-day remand in the case.
Anisul Huq was arrested from the Sadarghat area as he, along with Salman F Rahman, a former adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was trying to flee the capital through the waterway on 13 August.
