Company proposes handing over Moon Cinema
Company proposed handing over the ownership of the Moon Cinema Hall to the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust
Bangladesh Italian Marble Ltd on Sunday proposed handing over the ownership of the Moon Cinema Hall to the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust upon the payment of Tk100 crore as reimbursement value.
The lawyer of the company made the proposal during a hearing in the Supreme Court.
An Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain directed the company to submit the proposal in writing on August 22.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state while barrister Ajmalul Hossain moved on behalf of the company in court.
Earlier on July 28, the SC directed the authorities concerned to pay Tk100 crore to the Bangladesh Italian Marble Ltd, the owner of the cinema, by August 18.
The Moon Cinema Hall, which was located on Wais Ghat Road in Old Dhaka, was owned by the Bangladesh Italian Marble Works Ltd.
The cinema was handed over to the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Trust during the martial law regime between 1975 and 1979.
In 2000, the owner of the cinema filed a writ petition, claiming that the declaration of the cinema as an abandoned property was unlawful.
The petitioners challenged the constitutionality of the Fifth Amendment of 1979, which validated Martial Law Proclamation Orders.
