Murder accused gets death penalty in Narayanganj

A Narayanganj court has ordered the death penalty for an accused for killing a mother and her pregnant daughter in the city's Nitaiganj area two years back.

In addition to the death penalty, the court also fined the accused Tk1 lakh.

Judge Umme Sorabon Tohura from the Additional District and Judicial Magistrate Court of Narayanganj pronounced the verdict today (22 September).

The accused is Al Jobayer Shopnil, son of Alauddin from the city's Paikpara area. He had hacked Ruma Chakrabarti, 46, and her daughter Ritu Chakrabarti, 22, to death while carrying out a robbery at Dal Patti area in Nitaiganj on 1 March, 2022.

Expressing satisfaction at the verdict, plaintiff Ram Prasad Chakrabarti said, "This killer has ended my entire family. I urge the law adviser to quickly implement the judgement."

Additional Prosecutor Abdur Rahim said, "The court has given the verdict based on evidence from 22 witnesses. We are satisfied with the verdict. Basically, the accused had killed the two women while carrying out a robbery."

According to the case statement, Jobayer entered a house on the sixth floor of a building at Dal Patti area in Nitaiganj for robbery on 1 March, 2022. There, he killed the mother and her daughter with a knife.

Not being able to flee, he stayed inside the house. Later, the locals detained him and handed him over to police.

The Detective Branch of police submitted the charge sheet to the court in January, 2023, based on which the verdict was pronounced today.
