Shamsul Haque alias Badar Bhai of Jamalpur, who was convicted of war crimes in 2016, walked out of jail on 21 November after finishing his 10-year imprisonment.
He is the first convicted war criminal to walk out of Kashimpur Central Jail after finishing their sentence, according to International Crimes Tribunal sources.
Shamsul was arrested in 2015 from his residence in Jamalpur. On 2 March of that year, the ICT had issued arrest warrants against eight war criminals from the district, including Shamsul. They were indicted on charges of crimes against humanity, and mass murders among others in October. Shamsul was sent to jail.
On 18 July 2016, the tribunal delivered the verdict, sentencing five, including Shamsul, to imprisonment unto death. Three others were sentenced to death. Shamsul, along with another convict SM Yusuf Ali who was also sentenced to jail unto death, appealed against the tribunal's verdict.
Yusuf died while their appeal application was under process.
