A Supreme Court (SC) lawyer has filed a writ petition with the High Court (HC) seeking stricter measures to stop people from lighting up fireworks on the rooftops of buildings, open spaces, and parks across the country, including Dhaka city, on the night of 31 December.
Advocate Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman filed the writ today (30 December) and sought directives from the HC to impose measures to create a Section 144 like situation from 10pm tomorrow till 1am Wednesday to prevent fireworks and public gatherings.
The lawyer said the vacation bench led by Justice Md Jahangir Hossain will hold a hearing on the writ.
The home affairs secretary, the inspector general of police, Dhaka Metropolitan police commissioner, and related officials have been made respondents to the writ, Ashrafuzzaman said.
The writ has also sought stricter measures to stop people from playing loud music from 11pm to 1am and a ban on public gathering on streets, parks and open spaces from 10pm, he added.
The lawyer further said that he also sought a ban on the sale of fireworks and sky lanterns and urged the mobilisation of mobile courts in this regard.
The government has already imposed a ban on fireworks and sky lanterns and decided to keep the bars closed on New Year's Eve to maintain law and order and prevent disturbances.
