4 AL leaders arrested in Dhaka over killing of student during mass uprising

Police have arrested four leaders of Awami League in connection with the killing of Sheikh Md Sakib Rayhan, a student, during a protest organized as part of the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka's Pallabi area.
The arrestees are Professor Md Delwar Hossain, vice-president of Awami League's Pallabi Ward-2 unit; Ismail Hossain Javed, president of the Pallabi E-Block unit; Md Iftekharul Chowdhury Chamon, president of the Pallabi D-Block unit; and Md Lal Mia Mallick, general secretary of the Pallabi C-Block unit.
Pallabi police arrested them from the Muslim Bazar area of Pallabi on Monday night, said Talebur Rahman, the DC media officer of the DMP.
The case was filed at Pallabi Police Station on 3 October.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), on the afternoon of 19 July 2024, leaders and activists of various affiliated organisations of the Awami League, armed with firearms and local weapons, indiscriminately opened fire and threw crude bombs at the protesting students and the public on the road in Mirpur-6.
Md Sakib Rayhan was shot in the chest and he was declared dead upon arrival at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
During the investigation of the case, based on intelligence information and analysis of CCTV footage from the surrounding area of the incident, the AL leaders were arrested for their involvement in the murder of Sakib Rayhan.
