Per the declaration, EN Enterprises, the importing entity, was scheduled to import 41,120 kilograms of organic raw cotton. However, they imported chenille fabric instead, translating to an attempted evasion of Tk1.4 crore in import duties.
The Chattogram Custom House has confiscated a consignment of chenille fabric, brought from China without misdeclaration by an importer.
Per the declaration, EN Enterprises, the importing entity, was scheduled to import 41,120 kilograms of organic raw cotton. However, they imported chenille fabric instead, translating to an attempted evasion of Tk1.4 crore in import duties.
According to Rezaul Karim, assistant commissioner (audit investigation and research) of Chattogram Customs House, upon completion of the mandatory customs procedures, containers in the consignment were brought to a depot for deliveries. However, on Wednesday night, customs officials seized the consignment when Pragati Cargo Services, the importer's nominated clearing and forwarding (C&F) agent, attempted to secretly release the goods from the depot.
The importer's involvement in misdeclaration and evasion of government revenue was later unearthed, he said.
"In this regard, we are set to file cases against the importer for tax evasion and money laundering. Appropriate legal action will also be taken against the C&F agent in question," Rezaul Karim added.
However, Nazrul Islam, proprietor of Pragati Cargo Services, claimed he was not aware of the issue and would try and find out from his employees.
