The Dhaka University (DU) administration has filed a murder case with the Shahbagh Police Station over the death of Tofazzal Hossain, who was beaten to death after being suspected of being a thief at the Fazlul Haque Hall of Dhaka University.

Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the university's estate office, filed the case as plaintiff.
According to the case statement, Tofazzal was roaming around the Fazlul Haque Hall gate yesterday when some university students detained him. They initially took him to the guest room of the hall. They beat him up claiming he stole a phone.
He was then fed at the canteen. Some students tied his hands behind the window and beat him up until he collapsed.
When the matter was brought to some resident teachers of the university, with their help, Tofazzal was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with critical injuries, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead at 12:45am.
