Five die in separate incidents in Dhaka
Police insist that the newborn died in parental infanticide
Five people died in Dhaka in separate incidents on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Nasima, 35, Hafez, 8, Md Rana, 34, Omar Faruk, 36, and an unidentified infant.
The first incident took place in Dhaka's Adabar area where Nasima alias Haisna was allegedly strangled by her husband. Neighbours rescued the senseless woman on Sunday morning and rushed her to Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College Hospital
where on-duty doctors declared Nasima dead.
Sub-Inspector Md Habibur Rahman at Adabar Police Station said they were suspecting the husband Dablou Hawlader Rana for killing his wife over family feud.
In another incident, Hafez, an eight-year-old boy, was run over by a covered van in the city's Mirpur area on Sunday morning.
Officer-in-Charge of Shah Ali Police station Salahuddin Miah said the accident took place in front of Dhaka Commerce College. The boy died on the spot.
Police seized the covered van but the driver fled away. Hafez used to live with her mother at the Jheelpar slum area.
The third victim Md Rana was an electrician. He was electrocuted while working at a building at Badda area on Sunday noon, said officer-in-Charge of Badda Police Station Rafiqul Islam.
Rana used to live at the Hatirjheel area of the capital.
On Sunday afternoon, a man died at Shahin International Hotel in the Mohakhali area after a lift collapsed. The deceased Omar Faruk was a zonal manager at Chattogram-based BM Energy Ltd.
The deceased's wife Reshma said her husband had a job interview in Dhaka.
With fatal injuries, Omar was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.
On Sunday morning, police recovered the body of a newborn from a pond in Dhaka's Khilgaon Nandipara area. Khilgaon Police Sub-Inspector Sadikul Islam said there was no bruise on the body. He insisted that it could be parental infanticide.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
