Man arrested for killing a Fishing Cat in Jhenaidah

Police arrested a man today (21 December) for allegedly killing a fishing cat in the Naldanga Bazar area of Kaliganj Upazila, Jhenaidah.
The arrestee, Jahidul Islam, allegedly killed the fishing cat and hung it on the back of an electric rickshaw. Legal proceedings under Section 34(b) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, are currently underway against him, according to Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change press release.
On 19 December, a video surfaced on social media showing the fishing cat next to statements disrespecting freedom fighters.
After noticing the incident, members of the Forest Department visited the site, confirmed the facts through discussions with locals, public representatives, and wildlife conservation enthusiasts, and verified the authenticity of the crime.
The Forest Department further revealed that Jahidul Islam had been involved in wildlife killings in the past. Based on evidence, a general diary was filed against him.
The Forest Department emphasised that strict legal action against wildlife killers will continue.
