Besides, another man sustained bullet injury during the shooting
A man was allegedly shot to death by Kishore Kumar Mandal, a gunman of Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque at Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur.
Besides, another man sustained bullet injury during the shooting.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Sabur Uddin from Mirzapur upazila in Tangail. The injured person is Moin Uddin, 32, who hailed from Kutubdia village of Kaliakair upazila.
Inspector of Kaliakoir police station (investigation) Sanwar Hossain said Kishore Kumar, who is an assistant sub-inspector of police, hailed from Kutubdia village of the upazila.
He was chatting with the duo at around 9:45pm on Thursday at Kutubdia village. At one point, they involved in an argument and Kishore opened fire on them with his pistol, Sanwar said.
Shahid died on the spot while Moin sustained injuries. Kishore fled the spot after the incident, he added.
Local people rescued and sent injured Moin to Kaliakoir Upazila Health Complex. Then, he was taken to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar. Police recovered the body of Shahidul and sent it for an autopsy, the police officer further said.
Sanwar said Kishore and the other two were friends and addicted to drugs. They used to chat in the area.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakoir police station Alamgir Hossain Majumder said Kishore went into hiding after the incident and a police raid was underway to arrest him.
"We are primarily assuming that the incident is pre-planned or it has taken place because of a dispute over any issue," he said.
Vilifying the murder, the minister AKM Mozammel Haque said, "It is the gunman's personal responsibility.
The killing could not be justified by any means, said the minister, asking law enforcement agencies to take action against the gunman.
He also said the gunman was not on duty for the last three days.
Committing crimes with government arms without submitting it would not be accepted, said the minister adding that he has ordered police to arrest Kishore.
"He went there for his personal matter. It is under an investigation as to how Kishore carried a pistol with him," said the minister.
