The High Court set Wednesday to announce the verdict in the case
Islamic University Chhatra League Vice-President Sanjida Chowdhury Antara and six others were found guilty in the probe report the Kushtia deputy commissioner-led committee prepared after its investigation over the 11 February incident at the Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall of the university in Kushtia, where first-year student of banking and finance Fulpori Khatun were reportedly tortured and humiliated for several hours.
The investigation report, which was submitted to the Supreme Court Tuesday, also found the carelessness of Hall Provost Shamsul Alam, University Proctor Shahadat Hossain and others in performing their duties during the brutal incident.
A separate probe by the university authorities also found that Fulpori was tortured by a group of university students while Sanjida Chowdhury was in the lead. Halima Akther Urmi from the fine arts department, Israt Jahan Mim from the law department, and Tabassum Islam and Moyabiara from the finance and banking department were others in the group. Apart from those, another one, called Al-Amin, also threatened Fulphori Khatun over the phone on that day.
According to the report of the deputy commissioner -led inquiry committee, Sanjida ordered everyone to slap Fulpori. One of Sanjida's followers, Lima, snatched Fulpori's mobile phone while others forced her to beg pardon from Sanjida.
The two reports were submitted to the High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil, while Deputy Attorney general Tushar Kanti Roy represented the state. Plaintiff lawyer Gazi Md Mohsin and his fellow Azgar Hossain Tuhin were also present in the court.
Tushar Kanti Roy informed the court that five accused have already been suspended from the hall. The bench set Wednesday to announce the verdict in the case and called the lawyer of the Islamic University, if it has any.
On 11 February this year, Fulpori Khatun, a residential student of the Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall, was subjected to physical torture from 11:30pm to 3:00am. The victim made a complaint about the torture the next day.
Lawyer Gazi Md Mohsin, also a former Islamic University student, filed the writ petition on behalf of Fulpori with the High Court on 15 February asking for instructions to take legal action against the people involved in the crime.
On the preliminary hearing of the writ, the High Court ordered forming a three-member committee to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the victim. It also asked authorities concerned to keep Sanjida Chowdhury and Tabassum out of the university campus for the sake of proper investigation.
