Daily Bhorer Kagoj shuts down
The daily Bhorer Kagoj has announced the closure of its publication.
The newspaper's owners issued a notice declaring the closure today (20 January), reports local media.
According to reports, over the past few days, some journalists at Bhorer Kagoj have been demanding wages as per the Eighth Wage Board and the payment of arrears from their date of appointment.
On Sunday (19 January), a section of the journalists, along with leaders of the journalists' union and outsiders, held a demonstration in front of the newspaper's head office.
In response, the authority issued a notice today.
The notice stated that under Section 12 of the Labor Act 2006, the decision to close the organisation's head office was made due to circumstances beyond the owner's control.
A senior journalist from Bhorer Kagoj told the media that the organisation has no pending salaries.
However, while some journalists are paid under the Eighth Wage Board, others hired on a consolidated basis are now demanding wage board benefits, which has caused the dispute, said the journalist.
The prominent Bengali-language daily newspaper was first published on 15 February 1992. Based in Dhaka, the newspaper was available in both print and online formats.
Naimul Islam Khan was the founding editor of the newspaper. He was followed by Matiur Rahman, Benazir Ahmed, Abed Khan, and currently, Shyamal Dutta.
