Dhaka metro urges passengers to give back 2 lakh cards they skipped submitting at stations
Metro rail has been unable to retrieve two lakh cards from its passengers who skipped submitting those at the stations, which has currently lead to a shortage of tickets, according to the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
During a press conference yesterday at the company's office in the capital, its Managing Director Mohammad Abdur Rouf urged the passengers to return these cards, stating that taking single-journey tickets outside metro stations is a punishable offense.
He mentioned that a total of 268,441 single-journey tickets had been issued across all stations.
"Among these, two lakh cards were not submitted to the designated machines at the exit gates of the stations. Additionally, 6,881 cards have become unusable due to damage, and 1,500 cards were lost in other ways," he added.
As these cards cannot be used for any other purpose outside the metro rail, he asked passengers to return the cards to the nearest station to help prevent any financial loss to the state.
Security personnel at the stations reported that while tickets may be purchased for several family members, often only one or two are returned when they exit together. The remaining tickets are not submitted either intentionally or unintentionally. Many passengers may also exit without returning their tickets amidst the crowd. Such incidents have been observed multiple times.
