Dhaka city corporations to remove illegal vehicles, pavement encroachers
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam also attended the meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon on Tuesday said that both city corporations are gearing up to remove all illegal vehicles and uproot illegal establishments from the pavements of the capital.
"To remove all types of illegal vehicles and rickshaws from Dhaka's streets, we will start conducting drives with the help of police, soon," the Dhaka South mayor said after a meeting of bus route rationalisation committee.
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam also attended the meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban.
The mayor said that police is working hard to identify illegal parking spots in Dhaka, which will soon be uprooted through the drives.
He also said that they will evict all illegal vendors, shops and other installations, from pavements across the capital.
Responding to a query about Ward 9 Councillor AKM Mominul Haque Sayeed's involvement in illegal gambling operations, the mayor said he was not embarrassed about by the news.
"There is no question of being embarrassed about one councillor's illegal activities. The law will work at its own speed. I have written a letter to LGRD ministry to take action against him. As a mayor, I strongly support the prime minister's action against illegal casinos," said Sayeed Khokon.
He also said that the ward councillor was usually absent during most of the city corporation's board meetings.
"We have asked airport authority to check for Sayeed's departure," the Dhaka South mayor said, hoping that the ongoing drives against illegal casinos would end in success.
