Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has asked the officials concerned to conduct mobile courts against battery-powered rickshaws and vans from October 5.
He gave the instruction during a meeting at Nagar Bhaban on Sunday.
Regarding the drive, DSCC Chief Estate Officer Rasel Sabrin said the mayor had directed a drive to be conducted against illegally-mechanised rickshaws and vans – to bring discipline to the roads.
"Two executive magistrates have already been appointed to conduct the drive, and it will continue until further notice," he added.
"During the drive, the illegally-modified rickshaws and vans will be dumped and fined. These motorised vehicles often lead to accidents," Rasel said.
On 13 September, DSCC started the registration and renewal process of: rickshaws, vans, wheelbarrows, tow carts, and horse carts.
Then the DSCC mayor announced a ban on battery-powered rickshaws and vans. He warned that legal action would be taken if mechanised rickshaws or vehicles were found on the roads.
