Authorities have sentenced five students of Khulna University to five different terms for physically assaulting and abusing junior students overnight. Action was also taken against two other students for obstructing investigation and academic activities.
This was announced on Wednesday night via a circular signed
by Md Sharif Hasan Limon, the university's director of student affairs and member secretary of the disciplinary board.
He said, "We did not want to take disciplinary action against
the student during this covid-19 situation. However, since one of the students requested for a speedy investigation, we had no option but to do it now. If they wish, the students can lodge an appeal (against the decisions) with the Academic Council."
On 27 January last year, five students from the English department, residents of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, were accused of physically and mentally torturing juniors. The abused students appealed to the authorities for justice. Also, during the first week of January last year, two students misbehaved with two faculty members during the students' movement demanding reduction of salaries and fees.
