Will lockdown administrative building tomorrow if dependent quota not completely abolished: RU students
The move comes after the administration decided to bring the quota down from 4% to 1%
Students of Rajshahi University (RU) have announced an indefinite lockdown of the RU administrative building, rejecting the authorities' decision to keep a 1% dependent quota in admissions.
RU students announced the lockdown in an emergency press conference on the campus tonight (1 January), hours after the university administration announced its decision to reduce the dependent quota from 4% to 1%.
Speaking at the press conference, Salauddin Ammar, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's RU unit, said if the administration does not abolish the dependent quota before 9:50am tomorrow, they will make the officials leave the the administrative building and lock it down for an indefinite period.
He also requested to all students to boycott all classes and participate in tomorrow's programme.
Earlier in the day, the Rajshahi University administration announced reducing the dependent quota – fixed for the children of the university's teachers and employees – for admission from the existing 4% to 1%.
The university announced the reduction in a press statement issued by its public relations wing.
The quota for sons and daughters of teachers, officers and employees has been re-fixed for undergraduate and undergraduate (Honours) admissions in the academic year 2024-2025.
"Now it has been decided to keep the quota at 1% only for sons and daughters of assistants and general employees," reads the press statement.
This decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the admission committee held at the Senate building of the university, it adds.
Committee President Vice-Chancellor Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib presided over the meeting.
RU students have been protesting for the last month demanding the removal of the dependent quota.
