Service rules violation: EC seeks action against additional DIG of tourist police
The Election Commission (EC) has asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to take action against Md Moniruzzaman, the additional DIG of tourist police, for participating in electoral activities in violation of government service rules.
Moniruzzaman was present in uniform when the nomination paper of a candidate of Jhenaidah-1 constituency by-polls was collected from a political party's office, an incident that was reported by various newspapers and media outlets, according to the EC's letter sent to the senior secretary of the Public Security Division on 13 May.
Earlier on 29 April, Moniruzzaman accompanied his younger brother Wahiduzzaman, general secretary of the Sailkupa Municipal AL, while submitting the latter's nomination paper at the Awami League office in Dhaka, media reports said.
Wahiduzzaman is contesting with the AL ticket for the upcoming by-election in the Jhenaidah-1 constituency.
The seat became vacant on 16 March following the death of MP Abdul Hyee, the elected member of the 12th National Parliament from Shailkupa, Jhenaidah.
Hyee, a freedom fighter and the president of the district AL, won the 7 January elections for the fifth consecutive term.
A by-election for this seat is scheduled for 5 June.
