Ex-SI jailed for killing Jubodal activist in Narayanganj in 2022
Narayanganj Judicial Magistrate Senior Shafia Sharmin issued the order after police placed Konok before the court seeking a seven-day remand
A Narayanganj court today (3 January) sent Mahfuzur Rahman Konok, a former Detective Branch Sub-Inspector (SI), in a case filed over the murder of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Jubodal activist Shaon during a BNP procession in the city in 2022.
Narayanganj Judicial Magistrate Senior Shafia Sharmin issued the order after police placed Konok before the court seeking a seven-day remand, Court Inspector Kaiyum Khan told The Business Standard.
"The court set the next hearing for Monday," the inspector said.
He added that Konok, who was transferred from DB to the Armed Police Battalion in Dhaka later, arrested from his workplace yesterday around 11:30pm.
According to police sources, accused Konok, while working at the Detective Branch, fired indiscriminately during a clash with police before the start of a BNP anniversary procession in 2022. Shaon was shot in the chest in the firing and died on the spot.
He was removed from the DB after photos of him firing were circulated on the social media.
On 21 October 2024, Shaon's elder brother Milon Pradhan filed a case with Sadar Police Station. The case named 52 people as accused, including the then district magistrate, police superintendent, and five former MPs.
