Former textiles and jute minister and member of parliament of Narayanganj-1 constituency Golam Dastagir Gazi has been arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Gazi was arrested from his Shantinagar home yesterday (24 August) night in a murder case filed with Narayanganj's Rupganj police station, sources at the DMP confirmed.
Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Molla Md Khalid Hossain told BSS that Gazi went into hiding to avoid arrest. He has been taken to DB office after the arrest, he added.
Rupganj Police Station Inspector Jobair Hossain said, "Gazi will be shown arrested in a murder case filed on 21 August in connection with the death of a class 10 student in Rupganj."
According to the case, Roman Mia, 17, son of Anwar Hossain of Chanpara in Narayanganj was shot multiple times while attending a victory procession in the afternoon on 5 August.
When taken to a local private hospital, doctors declared him dead.
On 21 August, victim's aunt Rina Begum filed a case with Rupganj police station charging former bridge minister Obaidul Quader, former parliament member of Narayanganj-1 constituency Golam Dastgir Gazi, his son Gazi Golam Murtaza, some UP chairmen, leaders and workers of Awami League and the party's allied organizations and some 50 to 60 unidentified people.
Golam Dastagir Gazi was elected MP from Rupganj-1 constituency in Narayanganj in the 12th parliamentary elections as an Awami League candidate.
