Gas emission from tube well pit at Brahmanbaria school stopped 

The emission of gas and sand from a school's tube well pit in Kasba upazila, Brahmanbaria has been stopped this evening.

However, the emission that began on Wednesday has caused the Sher-e-Bangla High School losses of around Tk1 crore, said school authorities. 

Al Mamun Bhuiya, headmaster of the school, said academic activities will resume from Sunday if the emission does not restart. 

"The situation is normal now," said Rezaul Karim, plant operator of Kasba's Salda Gas Field. 

"Water levels have gone several feet down and the emission of gas and sand remains halted," he added.  

Located in the upazila's Biddyanagar village, the authority of Sher-E-Bangla High School shut the school for the students' safety.

According to sources, the school authority decided to install a new tube well on its premises to provide safe drinking water for the students.
 
"Workers had dug about 500 feet below to set up the tube well. Suddenly on Wednesday, gas along with sand began spewing out when the water filter's pipe was lifted," said headmaster Al Mamun Bhuiya.

"At around 11.45am today, two trees and a portion of the school's boundary wall collapsed." 

Earlier on Thursday, a delegation of Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) visited the spot.

"A sample was collected from the spot. We held several meetings with the senior authorities of Bapex. Based on how the situation unfolds on Saturday 8am, next steps will be taken," said Rezaul Karim.
