Fear of new Covid variant: Nat'l advisory body urges caution
It advises wearing masks at hospitals, screening travellers from abroad
With the rise of the JN.1 Covid variant globally, Bangladesh's National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 has issued key recommendations to curb its spread, despite the current controlled situation within the country.
To safeguard public health, the committee recommended precautionary measures, particularly for individuals with low immunity. Wearing masks in high-risk settings like hospitals is crucial to minimise transmission risks, it said.
The committee also advised screening travellers arriving from abroad.
It came up with the recommendations in its 65th meeting held on Tuesday night, with NTAC President Dr Mohammad Shahidullah in the chair, according to a press release.
While the Covid-19 is currently under control, with no new variants detected yet, the committee remains cautious and urges continued vigilance.
Emphasising close monitoring of infections, it recommended the Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) strengthen surveillance through global report analysis. This proactive approach would ensure swift access to Covid tests and ICU beds in potential future emergencies.
Additionally, the committee advised screening travellers arriving from abroad. Based on ongoing scientific data analysis, the committee suggests considering a fourth dose for individuals at high risk.
The meeting also recommended conducting Covid testing before any surgery for symptomatic patients.
