DAB demands resignation of health minister, both Dhaka mayors
The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) has demanded the resignation of the health minister and both mayors of the Dhaka City Corporation for failing to control the dengue situation.
Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club today (13 July), DAB President Prof Harun Al Rashid made the call saying, "The health minister and the two mayors of Dhaka should resign taking liability for failing to control the dengue situation."
Criticising the government's recent initiatives of imposing fines on institutions for containing Aedes larvae on premises, he said, "It's an attempt to pin the blame on others."
The DAB will hold some programmes to abate the situation during the dengue epidemic, he said.
Besides, the organisation demanded the dengue situation be declared a national disaster and urged the government to take necessary measures in controlling dengue and providing medical care to the affected patients.
Secretary General of the DAB Md Abdus Salam, read out a written statement where he explored the past history of dengue outbreaks in the country, condemning the government for playing down the actual situation.
"According to the media, the number of dengue deaths and cases is significantly higher than the government's count," he said adding, "Like all other matters, the government is lying or hiding information about the dengue epidemic."
He also said the free dengue tests promised in government hospitals are not being executed as no effective initiative has been taken.
