Dhaka South declares 22 areas, including Hazaribagh and Shonir Akhra, as dengue red zones
The death toll from dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease, has risen to 790 this year as 12 more patients died during the last 24 hours across the country.
The Dhaka South yesterday declared its 14 and 56 wards as "dengue red zone' following a spike in dengue infections in these areas.
Both wards recorded 11 dengue cases between 2-8 September, Dhaka South Spokesperson Md Abu Nasher confirmed to The Business Standard.
A comprehensive programme will be conducted tomorrow in both wards, involving special cleaning and the eradication of Aedes mosquito breeding sites.
The areas covered by ward 56 are West Rasulpur, East Rasulpur, South Rasulpur, Borogram West, Borogram, Islamnagar, Alinagar, Huzurpara, and West Ashrafabad.
Areas that fall under ward 14 are Jigatala (Tin Majar), Jigatala Staff Quarters, Tallabagh and Mitali Road, Charakghata Tallabagh and Tali Office Road, Birban Kachra, Gajmahal Road, Hazaribagh Tannery Area, South Sultanganj, Sonatnagar (Maneshwar), Maneshwar (Jigatala), Shikaritola, Maneshwar (1-38) and South Madhubazar.
Wards 5, 22, 53, and 60 of Dhaka South were declared as "dengue red zone" last month.
Earlier on 23 August, Dhaka South mayor said if more than 10 dengue patients are found in a ward in a week, that ward will be declared a "dengue red zone".
The number of dengue patients is likely to see a spike in red zones, authorities said. Special anti-mosquito drive will be conducted in red zones.
Besides, day-long special cleaning and thorough drives using larvicide in the morning and adulticide will be conducted in the afternoon in the areas.

Meanwhile, the death toll from dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease, has risen to 790 this year as 12 more patients died during the last 24 hours across the country.
According to the latest update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday, among 12, four were undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Dhaka and the rest were outside it.
A total of 2,129 new dengue patients were hospitalised during that time. According to the latest figure, a total of 1,61,964 were admitted to hospitals this year.
Of the new cases, 843 were reported in Dhaka city and 1,286 were from various parts of the country.
The DGHS said a total of 9,891 patients are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals where 4,016 are in Dhaka.
