Indian High Commission in Dhaka celebrates ‘Maitri Diwas’, the day the country recognised Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign nation in 1971
India and Bangladesh have deep stakes in each other's progress and prosperity, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma said yesterday (6 December), as he described people as the cornerstone of this relationship.
He made the remarks while addressing a musical evening organised by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka at the Indian Cultural Centre in the capital's Gulshan, marking the 53rd anniversary of "Maitri Diwas".
On this day on 6 December, 1971, India recognised Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign nation – 10 days ahead of the victory against Pakistan on 16 December.
Verma described the occasion as "a milestone and an everlasting source of inspiration guiding the India-Bangladesh relationship", according to a press release issued by the High Commission today (7 December).
He emphasised the important role that the youth have to play as the custodians of the future of India-Bangladesh relations.
The high commissioner hoped to further reinforce the existing interdependencies between the two countries through more robust linkages in connectivity, culture and commerce.
The event was attended by a large gathering, particularly Bangladeshi students and youth. Those who joined also included heads of foreign missions in Dhaka, freedom fighters, members of civil society, and eminent personalities from the fields of art and culture.
The event included a lively cultural programme. Many young and eminent artistes offered soulful performances in traditional, folk and contemporary music, enchanting the audience and infusing the evening with youthful energy.
