Residents panic as floodwaters break regulator in Noakhali's Musapur
If the tide comes in, the entire area of Companiganj will be flooded. Only Allah can save us now," Ayub Ali, the chairman of Musapur union parishad, said
Due to heavy rainfall and water from upstream, the 23-vent regulator of Feni River in the Musapur union of Noakhali's Companiganj has collapsed.
A regulator is a hydraulic structure used to control the flow and level of water in canals and rivers, critical for managing irrigation and preventing flooding.
The collapse of the regulator has caused panic among residents in Noakhali's Companiganj, Kabirhat and Feni's Sonagazi, Daganbhuiya, and surrounding areas.
Deputy Commissioner Dewan Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter to reporters at 11:30am today (26 August).
"The regulator collapsed due to the force of the water, breaking its gates. Although the floodwaters recede during low tide, they could enter the populated areas during high tide. An engineering team from the army is working on the issue," said Dewan Mahbubur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Noakhali.
Ayub Ali, the chairman of Musapur union parishad, said, "The regulator broke because it could not withstand the intense pressure of the water.
"The local people are in tears. Everyone feels helpless. If the tide comes in, the entire area of Companiganj will be flooded. Only Allah can save us now," he added.
Md Anwar Hossain Patwary, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Companiganj, requested that people refrain from crowding the area near the regulator to facilitate the work of the engineers from the Water Development Board.
