Lawmaker opposes proposed duty on car imports of new MPs
Awami League lawmaker Nur Mohammad has opposed the proposed 25% duty on the imported cars of members of parliament, at least for the newly elected ones.
"I appeal to the finance minister to reconsider this. Because we are new members of parliament," said the MP from Jamalpur-1 constituency during the budget session of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad today.
He said the duty can be imposed on MPs who have been elected before. "In our case (new MPs), the Finance Minister should reconsider it."
He proposed that if such a duty is absolutely necessary, a minimum tax could be set instead.
He also said black money investment should be allowed in the stock market, similar to the provision mentioned in the budget for real estate.
Noor Mohammed mentioned that the stock market has been struggling for two months and suggested that the finance minister could consider allowing the whitening of black money through investments in the stock market.
He also requested the finance minister to withdraw capital gains tax.
"The market is already down, and adding more taxes will hinder its progress. Therefore, I urge the finance minister to remove this tax," he added.
The lawmaker also stated that allowing investment of black money in real estate would boost the sector. The MP also requested the finance minister to reconsider the proposal in the budget to raise personal taxes.
