Protests after burglary: Jamuna Future Park calls off closure announcement

Jamuna Future Park, one of Dhaka's largest shopping malls, today (23 November) withdrew its earlier decision to close the mall just hours after announcing it, following an alleged robbery, according to mall authorities.
After a meeting between the mall authorities and business association, they have agreed to conduct a thorough investigation into the robbery incident allegedly committed by the outsiders.
Earlier in the morning, shop owners and employees staged a demonstration against the mall authorities' decision to close the mall without taking any action after several mobile phones and electronic gadgets shops were allegedly robbed.
From around 12:30pm to 1:15pm, they blocked the road in front of Jamuna Future Park, causing severe traffic congestion.
Bhatara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tuhidul Islam told The Business Standard traffic returned to normal after the protesters were dispersed around 1:15pm.
Four stores were reportedly burgled, among which are mobile shops on the 4th floor and one gold shop on level 2.
The shop owners reported an approximate loss of Tk2-3 crore in the mobile shop but the loss at the gold shop could not be known.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, an electronic gadget shop owner told TBS, after the theft of valuable goods at four shops Jamuna Future Park authorities did not take much steps.
"On contrary, they even threatened the shop owners and misbehaved with us. Later we took to the streets and announced the indefinite closure of the market. After hours they listened to us and the shop owners withdrew the protest," the shop owner added.
