Jatiya Nagorik Committee condemns BNP leader's alleged threat to its member
It also said Nasim's men verbally abused Kaiyum's parents as they couldn't find him at the house and warned of taking revenge against the two brothers
Jatiya Nagorik Committee has condemned the alleged threat and harassment by a BNP leader to a member of the organisation for protesting against extortion.
In a statement issued today (5 January), Jatiya Nagorik Committee said the incident happened when committee member Arifur Rahman Tuhin was threatened and his family members were harassed by BNP's Jhalakathi district unit leader Nasim Uddin Akan's men after Tuhin's brother Atiqur Rahman Kaiyum protested an act of extortion by the BNP leader last month.
"Kaiyum tried to prevent Nasim from collecting extortion from the contractor of a canal development project by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). Getting angered by this incident, Nasim's people went to Kaiyum's house with sharp weapons several times in search of him," the committee said in the statement.
It also said Nasim's men verbally abused Kaiyum's parents as they couldn't find him at the house and warned of taking revenge against the two brothers.
Condemning the incident, the committee urged the law enforcers to bring the perpetrators to book immediately.
The committee also urged the BNP to take action against the extortionists and criminals within the party, the statement said.
