JP objected to by-polls on Ershad's death anniversary
A delegation of the party met Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday and urged him to fix another date for the polls to three parliamentary vacant seats -- Dhaka-14, Comilla-5 and Sylhet-3
Jatiya Party has objected to July 14 by-elections because the day is the second death anniversary of the party's founding chairman late Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
A delegation of the party met Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday and urged him to fix another date for the polls to three parliamentary vacant seats -- Dhaka-14, Comilla-5 and Sylhet-3.
After the meeting with the CEC, JP Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu told reporters, "On the day [14 July] our leaders and workers will not be mentally able to work for the elections. The CEC assured us that the commission will do what they can do in this regard."
Asked if the party will participate in the elections in case the date remains unchanged, he said the party was yet to decide on that.
When asked about elections to be held amid the pandemic, Ziauddin said the government must take actions to ensure compliance with hygiene rules.
