Labour unrest: Beximco to get Tk60cr in loans from govt to pay workers' wages
The government has decided to grant Tk60 crore in loans to Beximco Group in order to end the ongoing labour unrest of the workers of the company's factories centring unpaid October wages.
Earlier today, the government issued a notice through the labour ministry and finance division, signed by labour ministry Secretary AHM Shafiquzzaman.
The secretary had urged the workers to join work immediately.
Demanding one month's overdue salary, workers of several Beximco Industrial Park factories today demonstrated for the fifth consecutive day by blocking the Chandra-Nabinagar highway at Chakraborty intersection in the Sarabo area of Kashimpur, Gazipur.
They resumed their blockade on the highway at around 10am, after calling off the fourth day's protests late last night.
The labour ministry and finance division will jointly provide the loan, as per the decision in a meeting held today with officials of the Beximco Group at the Secretariat.
Confirming the matter to the media, Shafiquzzaman said it has been decided to provide the loan for paying last month's salary to settle the labour unrest at Beximco Group.
Beximco Group Director (Finance and Corporate Affairs) Osman Kaiser Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that the ministry will give Tk10 crore and the finance division Tk50 crore as a loan.
"There are some procedures to get through. It will take 1-2 days."
He also said they need a total of Tk80 crore. "We will arrange the remaining Tk20 crore ourselves."
