Some violated law, some politically involved: IGP on police role during July uprising
Police will fully cooperate with EC to ensure fair polls, he says
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said some police officers violated the law and failed to perform their duties during the student-led July movement.
"There is no doubt that during the movement, some police officers were politically involved, and several officers were killed in those incidents," he said during a press conference at the Police Headquarters in the capital today (5 December).
"The present government is transparent. Unlike the previous government, there are no murders or abductions we need to conceal. We have nothing to hide now," he said.
The IGP also addressed the officers affected by the protests and outlined the financial aid provided to the families of those killed and injured.
"We have given Tk13 lakh to the families of each of the 44 officers who lost their lives and issued fixed deposits to others. Additionally, we are in touch with the 2,500 injured officers and covering their medical expenses," he added.
IGP Baharul Alam said police officers across the country are working to eradicate crime. While there are some temporary difficulties, the police must earn back the trust of the people by performing well.
The IGP also acknowledged that several senior police officials, including former Special Branch chief Monirul Islam, Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun Or Rashid, and DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, are still missing.
When asked about the absconding police members who used excessive force during the mass uprising, he said, efforts are being made to identify the absconding police members.
"Those who are inside the country will be identified and arrested. Those who have fled outside the country. They will be brought back through a legal process," he added.
At the press conference, the IGP also stated that the police are now capable of assisting in conducting a fair election.
"I assure you that the police can fully cooperate with the Election Commission to ensure fair elections. We will fulfill this responsibility effectively," he said.
He added that since 5 August, the police have been working to maintain law and order across the country. After ensuring the safety of the public, the police will be prepared at the field level for the elections.
