LDP demands cancellation of Patenga container terminal contract
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has demanded the cancellation of an agreement with a foreign company over the management of Patenga Container Terminal (PCT).
"The PCT has been handed over to foreigners without regard to the rules and regulations. We will protest such a move until the agreement is cancelled," LDP Secretary General Shahadat Hossain Salim said in a statement today (8 October).
Shahadat Hossain Salim, a spokesperson of the 12-party alliance, also said if the responsibility of managing the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chattogram port is handed over to a foreign company, the workers at the port will become unemployed and various complications will arise, including labour unrest.
"The NCT terminal is an income-generating terminal. It has considerable investment from Chattogram port's own financing. The terminal is being managed efficiently by a domestic operator. At this moment there is no need for foreign investment and there is no opportunity for investment.
"The last government tried to hand over the management of the terminal to foreign a company. Even after the change of government, the henchmen of the former fascist government are still involved in the conspiracy to hand over the terminal to foreigners," he said.
