At least 30 in RU reportedly injured in clash after inter-departmental football match
At least 30 people, including a teacher and a journalist, were reportedly injured in a clash between students after an inter-departmental football match in Rajshahi University today (18 November).
The incident took place near the university's Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building around 8:30pm.
Professor Amirul Islam, the student adviser at the university, said, "Tensions arose between the students of the law department and the marketing department after an inter-departmental football game. We are trying to defuse the tension."
Professor Sayeda Anju, chairman of the law department, said, "I am now at Rajshahi Medical College with the injured teacher and students. Some students, including our teacher, were seriously injured."
Professor Nuruzzaman, president of the marketing department, could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, additional police and army members have been deployed on the university campus to control the situation.
According to university sources, the Marketing Department and Law Department played a match in Round 16 of the inter-departmental football tournament this afternoon.
The marketing department won the game 1-0. After the game, some students of both departments got into an argument at the stadium gate. At one stage, a clash ensued, and some people threw bricks.
At that time, Mahfuzur Rahman, a teacher in the law department, was injured by a brick on his head. Later, the students of the marketing department took out a procession.
When trying to record the video of the procession, journalist Abu Saleh was reportedly beaten and forced to delete the video from his mobile phone.
