Habib killed 70 tigers in the Sundarbans in the last 20 years
Police have arrested Habib Talukder, alias Bagh Habib, who killed 70 tigers in the Sundarbans in the last 20 years.
Sarankhola police arrested Habib early Saturday on the basis of secret information from Sonatala village in Southkhali union of Satkhira's Sharankhola upazila.
Later on the day, the court sent him to jail after police produced him before the court.
Bagh Habib, 50, is the son of late Kadam Ali Talukder of the upazila.
Sharankhola Range Officer (ACF) of the Sundarbans, Joynal Abedin, said Habib Talukder was a forest department-listed accused named 'Bagh Habib'. He has killed at least 70 tigers in the last 20 years. There are 9 cases of forest crime in the name of Habib. Three of them have arrest warrants.
He added, 'Tiger hunter Habib is most wanted by the forest department and police. His entry into the Sundarbans has long been banned. Even then he would secretly enter the forest and hunt wild animals.'
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sharankhola Police Station Saidur Rahman said arrest warrants were issued in three cases in the name of Habib Talukder for killing tigers.
The police have been looking for him for a long time. On a tip-off, they raided Sonatala village in Sharankhola around 2.30 am and arrested him while he was sleeping at the house of a local Rafiqul, added the OC.
