Nagorik Uddyog calls for forming commission to end discrimination
Nagorik Uddyog CEO Zakir Hossain today (21 December) urged the government to form a commission to end all discrimination in society.
Speaking at a day-long special conference on marginalised communities held at the KIB auditorium in Dhaka, he said, "The interim government has not taken any real initiative in the past four months to build a discrimination-free society that Bangladesh wanted through the July-August mass uprising.
"An overall picture of where and how discrimination is being practiced should be the subject of this government's investigation."
Also speaking at the event, Dalit Women Forum General Secretary Moni Rani Das said, "The Dalit community has been protesting for their rights for a long time, but their rights have not been achieved yet."
She called for the immediate passage of the proposed anti-discrimination law to protect the rights of Dalits and the deprived.
Advocate Hasnat Qayyum, Supreme Court lawyer and chief coordinator of the State Reform Movement, and Mushtaq Hossain, Standing Committee member of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, also spoke at the event.
