Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation on Thursday ahead of Pahela Baishakh.

She said, "Shubho Noboborsho [happy new year]. We have completed yet another year combatting all kinds of obstacles.

"On the eve of Bangla New year I pray we can build a smart Bangladesh by fighting all kinds of darkness and obstacles."
