10 injured as Chhatradal, Chhatra League clash in Munshiganj
At least 10 people, including general students, were injured in a clash between the activists of Chhatradal and Chhatra League at Munshiganj Polytechnic Institute today (5 January).
The clash erupted around 1:30pm, centring on Chhatra League activists' presence on campus to appear in departmental viva voce, said students and locals.
On information, police and the Army rescued the injured and sent them to Munshiganj General Hospital. Of them, two, including a Chhatradal activist, were sent to Dhaka with critical injuries.
Acknowledging the incident, Munshiganj sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sajib Dey said police visited the spot. "The injured were rescued and sent to the hospital."
According to students and locals, when some followers of the institute's Chhatra League leaders Madmudul Hasan Tarif and Shahbaz Ashiq arrived at the campus at noon to appear in their viva voce, activists of Chhatradal and some general students protested.
At one stage, some outsiders arrived in support of the Chhatra League men, ensuing a clash that left at least 10 people injured.
Soon after the incident, nine people were taken to police custody on suspicion of creating unrest on the campus.
One of the injured, Chhatradal activist Al Amin said the presence of the Chhatra League men was protested by everyone on the campus.
"At that time, the Chhatra League men reached out to outsiders through phone calls, and subsequently swooped on us."
Another injured, Chhatra League activist Durjoy said as they went to the campus to appear in the oral test, Chhatradal men carried out the attack after keeping them confined.
OC Sajib Dey said legal proceedings are underway to take action over the incident.
