Bangladesh’s political system transformed Hasina into a tyrant: GM Quader
He said people hope the interim government will ensure a fair election
Bangladesh's political system has transformed Sheikh Hasina into a tyrant and empowered her dominance, Jatiyo Party Chairman GM Quader said today (26 September).
"The constitution (of Bangladesh) grants the government unlimited power. For this reason, even a political party that wins overwhelming public support in a fair election can transform into an autocratic force," he said at a views exchange meeting at Jatiyo Party chairman's Banani office.
Quader further said, "In Bangladesh, nearly 100% of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches fall under the control of the head of government, including key constitutional positions. The government, in turn, becomes accountable to no one. Under these conditions, any government in Bangladesh can potentially become oppressive."
Mentioning that the people hope the interim government will ensure a fair election, the JaPa chairman said, "Before this [election], we call for necessary reforms across all sectors, including the constitution, to prevent any future government from becoming too powerful after winning elections."
Jatiyo Party Secretary General Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu, presidium member Sherifa Quader, Monirul Islam Milon, chairman's advisers Rafiqul Alam Salim and Zahid Hasan and Organising Secretary MA Hannan were also present at the meeting.
